What Is Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing, medically known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a fertility preservation procedure in which a woman's unfertilised eggs are retrieved from her ovaries, cooled to sub-zero temperatures using vitrification, and stored for future use. It lets you preserve younger, healthier eggs now and use them when you're ready.

Women choose egg freezing for elective reasonscareer, study, finances, or not having found the right partnerand for medical reasons, such as before chemotherapy or other treatment that can affect fertility. Vitrification (rapid freezing) is the modern technique that has replaced older slow-freezing, with markedly higher survival rates. A complete cycle takes about 2–3 weeks. See Who Should Consider Egg Freezing? to find your situation.

How Egg Freezing Works

  • Stimulation of Multiple Eggs Daily hormone injections for 10–14 days encourage your ovaries to mature multiple eggs in one cycle, instead of just one.
  • Egg Retrieval Under Sedation A 20–30 minute outpatient procedure under light sedation. A thin, ultrasound-guided needle retrieves the eggs from your ovaries.
  • Vitrification (Rapid Freezing) Mature eggs are cooled to −196°C using vitrificationa flash-freezing technique that prevents ice-crystal damage and preserves egg quality.
  • Cryostorage Until You're Ready Frozen eggs are stored in liquid-nitrogen tanks with continuous monitoring. They stay viable for many yearsbiologically, time stands still while frozen.
Vitrification vs slow-freeze Survival after thaw is typically 85–95% with vitrification, compared with around 60% for older slow-freezing.
Comfort Retrieval is done under light sedation. You can usually go home the same day, with mild discomfort that settles in 1–2 days.
Time A complete egg freezing cycle takes 2–3 weeks from the start of medication to retrieval.

Who Should Consider Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing isn't only for one type of woman. Some choose it to preserve future options when life isn't ready for a baby; others need it urgently before medical treatment that could affect fertility. Below are the most common situations where egg freezing makes senseand, honestly, where it might not.
I'm not ready to have children yet
Career, study, finances, partner statusmany reasons to delay motherhood. Egg freezing preserves the option without the urgency.
I haven't found the right partner
Single by circumstance or by choice, freezing in your late 20s or early 30s gives you time to find the right partner without compromising fertility.
I want to plan around my career
Many women freeze eggs in their late 20s and early 30s for more flexibility around career milestones.
I'm in a same-sex relationship, planning future biological children
Egg freezing today gives you and your partner more options for biological parenthood when you're ready.
I've been diagnosed with cancer
Chemotherapy, radiation and some surgeries can affect or end fertility. Freezing eggs before treatment preserves the option of biological children. We can typically start a cycle within days of consultation.
I have severe endometriosis
Endometriosis can reduce ovarian reserve over time. Freezing eggs early preserves them before further decline.
I have a family history of early menopause
If your mother or sisters reached menopause before 45, your own reserve may decline earlier.
I have low AMH or diminished ovarian reserve
When AMH testing shows low reserve, freezing sooner rather than later may preserve more usable eggs.
I'm planning gender-affirming treatment
Trans men can freeze eggs before testosterone therapy or gender-affirming surgery, preserving the option of biological children.

Your Step-by-Step Egg Freezing Journey

A complete egg freezing cycle takes about 2–3 weeks from the start of medication to egg retrieval. Here's the journey from first consultation to storage confirmation, with the time markers you need to plan around.
Step 1
Consultation & AMH Test
Meet your fertility specialist to discuss your goals, history and AMH (ovarian reserve) result. Your specialist creates a personalised plan. [Time: 1 visit + 24–48 hr for AMH]
Step 2
Cycle Planning
Once tests confirm the right protocol, your cycle medications are scheduled and home-delivered if needed. [Time: 3–7 days]
Step 3
Ovarian Stimulation
Daily hormone injections for 10–14 days, with 4–6 monitoring visits (ultrasound + blood tests). Medication is adjusted to your response. [Time: 10–14 days]
Step 4
Trigger Shot
Once eggs are mature, a final injection is timed preciselyusually 35 hours before retrieval. [Time: one injection]
Step 5
Egg Retrieval
A 20–30 minute procedure under light sedation. You go home the same day with someone to drive you; mild discomfort for 1–2 days is normal. [Time: half-day visit]
Step 6
Vitrification & Storage Confirmation
Mature eggs are vitrified within hours of retrieval. You receive confirmation of how many eggs were successfully frozen and stored. [Time: same day to 24 hours]

Egg Freezing Success Rates

Egg freezing success depends on three things: how well eggs survive thaw, how well thawed eggs fertilise, and the age at which the eggs were frozen. Here's an honest, multi-metric view rather than a single headline number.
Success metric
Typical range
Notes
Mature eggs per retrieval cycle
8–15 (avg ~12)
Depends on AMH, age, response to stimulation.
Post-thaw egg survival rate
85–95%
With vitrificationwell above older slow-freeze methods.
Fertilisation rate of thawed eggs
70–80%
Usually with ICSI (one sperm injected per egg).
Live birth per thawed egg (under 35)
~7–8%
Why ~10–15 eggs are typically advised for one child.
Live birth per thawed egg (35–37)
~5–6%
Slightly lower per-egg success.
Live birth per thawed egg (38–40)
~3–4%
Lowermultiple cycles often needed.
Methodology: Based on Cloudnine egg freezing cycles from [date range], n = [N]; live birth per thawed egg calculated from women who returned to use frozen eggs.
Cumulative view: Across 10–15 eggs frozen by a woman under 35, the cumulative chance of at least one live birth is typically 70–80%.
Honest framing: Egg freezing is not a guarantee. It buys a meaningful chance, not certainty.

Through Your Cycle Precautions, Side Effects and OHSS

  • Take Cycle Medication Exactly as Prescribed: Stimulation timing matters. Set alarms; don't skip or delay doses without speaking to your specialist.
  • Avoid Strenuous Activity Late in Stimulation: As the ovaries enlarge near the end of stimulation, intense exercise can risk ovarian torsion. Light walking is fine.
  • Watch for OHSS Symptoms: Mild bloating is common. Severe abdominal pain, rapid weight gain, nausea or breathlessness can signal Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndromecall immediately.
  • Limit Alcohol, Tobacco and Caffeine: Avoid alcohol and tobacco through the cycle; limit caffeine to about one cup a day.
  • Plan Time Off Around Retrieval: Retrieval is a half-day procedure. Plan the day off and a quieter day after; most women resume normal activity within 24–48 hours.
  • Eat Well and Stay Hydrated: Balanced, protein-rich nutrition supports recovery. Aim for 2–3 litres of water a day.

When to call your doctor immediately (OHSS). Contact your specialist urgently for: severe abdominal pain · rapid weight gain (more than 2 kg in 24 hours) · severe bloating · breathlessness · reduced urine output · fever above 38°C. These can be signs of OHSS. (Mandatory safety contentclinical safety lead to review.)

What is the best age to freeze my eggs?

Most fertility specialists recommend freezing between ages 28 and 35the window where egg quality is still high and you have enough remaining reproductive years to use them. Younger eggs give more usable eggs per cycle and higher live-birth rates per egg. At Cloudnine, we start with an AMH test and recommend the right timing for your individual situation.

How much does egg freezing cost in India?

A single egg freezing cycle at Cloudnine typically costs ₹[X]–[Y] lakh, covering stimulation monitoring, retrieval, vitrification and the first year of storage. Stimulation medication, AMH tests, and the future thaw/IVF cycle are separate, and storage is charged annually after Year 1. We share a full itemised breakdown before you commit.

How many eggs should I freeze?

Under 35, roughly 10–15 mature eggs give about a 70% chance of one live birth; at 35–37 it's about 15–20, and higher again after 38. The number depends on your age and whether you'd like the option of more than one child. Your AMH and response to stimulation will refine the target at consultation.

What is the success rate of egg freezing?

Success depends on thaw survival (typically 85–95% with vitrification), fertilisation of thawed eggs (around 70–80% with ICSI), and the age at freezing. For a woman under 35, the cumulative chance of a live birth across 10–15 frozen eggs is roughly 70–80%. Egg freezing buys a meaningful chance, not a guaranteewe'll give you realistic numbers for your situation.

How long can frozen eggs be stored?

Eggs vitrified at −196°C stay viable for many years, with healthy live births reported from eggs frozen 14+ years. There's no biological expiry dateegg quality is set at the time of freezing, not by how long they're stored. At Cloudnine, eggs are held in monitored cryostorage with annual renewal and multi-year prepay options.

WHY CHOOSE VITRIFICATION OF EGGS?

On Cloudnine, it's never too late to be a parent. By freezing your eggs in advance, you can choose to ride the parenting wave whenever you're ready. Vitrification is a state-of-the-art technology that allows women to store their fertility in a time capsule, without the gnawing worry of their eggs diminishing in quality as they age. This way, you don't have to play a perpetual game of ping-pong with your biological clock.

IS VITRIFICATION OF EGGS RIGHT FOR ME?

The stress of keeping up with your biological clock can be overwhelming. And yet, you may find that there's so much life to live before you can even think of having a baby. By considering vitrification, you can make time for the things that feature higher on your priority list. When you finally do reach a stage where you're ready to start a family, you can trust us to get you started on Cloudnine. Your eggs will be waiting.

PROFESSIONAL GOALS

Vitrification can empower you to live life to the fullest. Whether it's chasing that promotion, taking a trip around the world or just having a bit of time to yourself, vitrification lets you postpone pregnancy until you're ready for it. The technology seeks to equalise the fertility arcs of the male and female partners.

LIMITED SUPPLY OF EGGS

The number of eggs that your ovaries house is finite. Naturally, as you age, this reserve of eggs steadily depletes. In turn, the chances of conceiving a baby decline with age. Freezing your eggs can ensure that healthy eggs are extracted and stored for later use.

DIMINISHING QUALITY OF EGGS

As ovarian reserves decline, there is a corresponding fall in their quality. Lower quality eggs can lead to chromosomal abnormalities and an increased risk of miscarriage. By opting for vitrification on Cloudnine, you can guard your current set of healthy eggs and save them or later.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS OF VITRIFICATION OF EGGS?

Vitrification essentially involves four steps, and overlaps significantly with the first half of a typical in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment.

1. CONSULTATION

As a first step, your doctor will assess your ovarian reserves through a blood test and possibly also conduct a transvaginal ultrasound. These tests independently gauge the level of oocytes nearing maturation.

2. OVULATION STIMULATION

Following your consultation, your fertility consultant will prescribe a gentle course of fertility medication that will catalyse your ovulation cycle. On Cloudnine, our treatment plans are designed carefully, with every guest receiving a detailed, bespoke treatment solution.

3. EGG COLLECTION

Egg collection is a straightforward, painless process performed under anaesthesia. During the procedure, your doctor will guide a light needle towards your ovarian follicles to aspirate the mature eggs. The process usually lasts around half an hour.

4, EGG FREEZING

Once a series of eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, they are instantly flash-frozen through a technique known as vitrification.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF VITRIFICATION OF EGGS?

Vitrification has been known to carry a few risks, although the majority of these are closely related to how well the procedure is carried out.

OVARIAN HYPERSTIMULATION SYNDROME

Vitrification involves the administration of fertility medication that could, if prescribed in excessive quantities, lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. The condition can cause the ovaries to swell, following the egg retrieval phase. The panel of fertility specialists on Cloudnine sensitise themselves towards every guest by understanding their medical history and recommending a tailored solution. Our treatments are measured, yet effective.

BLEEDING AND INFECTION

The egg retrieval process conducted before vitrification involves the use of a needle, which can cause bleeding and infection if not handled appropriately. On Cloudnine, safety is paramount, and every device that we use in an invasive procedure is thoroughly sterilised.
